CoLabratory at the Glass Curtain with Annie Morse

Opening on Sept. 6 and running through Nov. 2, CoLabratory at Columbia College’s Glass Curtain Gallery dives deep into an examination of collaborative art. Jettison sat down with the show’s curator, Annie Morse, for five questions on the subject of artistic collaboration, and the nature of collaboration between the artist and the viewer.

Jettison: In curating CoLaboratory, what impression did you want to give visitors?

Annie Morse: The formal presentation of the exhibition was a secondary consideration. What seemed interesting to the artists and to me was the structure of the collaboration—how each group would interact among themselves, and as a discrete entity in collaboration with another group. It was important to leave a lot of breathing room for the piece to evolve out of those discussions and clarifications.

Jettison: How were (f)utility projects and ED JR. selected? What about their particular styles of collaboration interest you as a curator?

Annie Morse: I knew some of the artists in each collaborative and I trusted their instincts in constructing collaborations. As a curator, one of my primary goals is to work with people who value the effort of those who support them, and this was an exhibition opportunity that allowed full acknowledgement of that part of artistic practice. Neysa Page-Lieberman and the exhibitions advisory board at Columbia were also interested in working with these artists and together we found a way to bring the exhibition into being.

Jettison: Why is collaboration in art interesting to you, both between artists and between artists and their audience?

Annie Morse: So often, Western culture presents the artist as a lone wolf, a rugged individualist, a solitary figure against the crowd—all these clichés spring from the idea that art has to confront societal expectations to be relevant, to innovate, or to bring something new into the world. My feeling is that art can do all these useful things but that artists don’t, and don’t have to, do it alone. I think that collaborations happen inevitably and fruitfully even when artists work in relative isolation—whether they are collaborating with abstract or conceptual sources of inspiration or with the person who puts a plate of food in front of them every so often. And, in my opinion, the audience is absolutely essential. I really don’t think a tree falling in the forest makes a sound if no one’s around to hear it. And I think it’s tragic when ideas don’t find a thoughtful response. So, creating points of contact between artist and audience is very important to me. That’s one of the reasons we’re having so many opportunities for people to interact with the artists and the work by painting right there in the exhibition, engaging in discussion, and making things move and change in the gallery space.

Jettison: How does the show collaborate with the actual gallery space?

Annie Morse: I don’t think there can be a collaboration among inanimate objects, but I do think the exhibition successfully engages both the way artists and visitors interact with the space, and with the expectations of curatorial authority that many people bring to an exhibition. To say that I have been a hands-off curator is an understatement; the show grew out of the interaction of the artists in the space and the specific gifts and skills they brought with them. I had no idea what would be seen on September 8 when I helped ED JR. and (f)utility projects propose the show last spring. My job has been to support Neysa, the Director of Exhibition and Performance, and the gallery coordinator, Mark Porter, by acting as a liaison, when needed, among all these parties. What we ended up with is a thing of beauty that is site-specific but also visitor-centric. Visitors will make the show happen as they interact with the space, the structures, and the projections they find in the gallery. If I were a different kind of curator I would use the word “reify.” It’s an exhibition with durable conceptual foundations but it relies on the way people will handle it, photograph it, and change it for its identity.

Jettison: Are (f)utility projects and ED JR. collaborating together with their projects?

Annie Morse: Yes, from the beginning the idea was for ED JR.’s videos to respond to the space created by (f)utility project’s site-specific structures, and vice-versa. There has also been an amazing willingness on everyone’s part to pitch in and help each other do what needs to be done to achieve the common goal. The collaborative spirit is also a spirit of cooperation, and there’s been a refreshing absence of drama or ego-driven narrative in the whole experience.

Jettison: Give us your top five collaborations (past or present).

Annie Morse: I’m interested in the theoretical context of collaboration largely because of Adelheid Mers’ longtime investigation of its potential. She’s a friend and we collaborated on an exhibition called Early Adopters at the former 3Arts Club space. I loved working on Robert Amft, Paintings for Particular People at the Hyde Park Art Center with John Corbett in 2005; we didn’t really know each other at the outset but the work was a great pleasure because we brought different sensibilities to the show and learned a lot from each other. As an instructor in the Arts Administration and Policy program at the School of the Art Institute I taught a class called The Collaborative Project and one class took that title literally and collaborated to establish a student development fund that exceeded everyone’s expectations and is still going strong. They were awesome in the original sense of the word. I feel that the work I do in Museum Education at the Art Institute is a collaboration with the public, who volunteer to join a conversation about art and seeing with incredible generosity, insight, and passion. Finally, my partner and I, like a lot of couples, are really not very good at working together, so the fact that we are still trying after 20-odd years is very encouraging to me.

Annie Morse has worked with Museum Education at the Art Institute since 1996. As Senior Lecturer in the Adult Programs Division and liaison to the academic community, she coordinates the Graduate Student Seminar and an artist lecture series, Artists Connect. Morse graduated from the Master’s program in Modern Art History, Theory, and Criticism at SAIC and received her MS in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is an independent curator who has worked with the Contemporary Arts Council, The Three Arts Club of Chicago, and the Hyde Park Art Center. “CoLaboratory” is her first exhibition with Columbia College Chicago.

Barry Ptolemy on the Transcendent Man

It’s been long journey for filmmaker Barry Ptolemy in his pursuit to capture the ideas and life of one of the United State’s most controversial and brilliant minds—that of futurist and inventor, Ray Kurzweil. Ptolemy’s film, Transcendent Man, released in 2009, will hold its Chicago premiere on the IMAX screen of the Museum of Science and Industry tonight.

The film is beautifully shot and features some of the biggest names in science, politics and entertainment talking about the man whose ideas about the future are some of the most mesmerizing of our time.

But Transcendent Man didn’t begin as a documentary about the man who would become the film’s hero. As Ptolemy originally conceived the story, it would focus on the theory that Kurzweil is perhaps best known for—The Singularity—or the moment in time when the line between humans and artificial intelligence ceases to be clear.

Ptolemy first came in contact with Kurzweil and his theories the way many people have—through Kurzweil’s 2005 book The Singularity is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology. To say that the book had an impact on Ptolemy would be to put it lightly.

“Immediately upon reading the first couple of chapters, I thought it could be one of the most powerful films that anybody could make,” Ptolemy said. “It didn’t dawn on us until many, many months later that we would incorporate Ray and make it a movie about him.”

Transcendent Man follows Kurzweil as he travels around the world talking about the future of humans, technology and what he believes is in store for both. Fast-paced and entertaining, it explores Kurzweil’s predictions for the future, even as it traces the inventor’s past, his critics and his relationship with his father.

“I wanted something ancient and mythical,” Ptolemy said of his search for the film’s narrative.

As much as Transcendent Man is the story of Kurzweil’s predictions about what the future holds for humans and technology, it’s also a moving portrait of a man’s relationship to his father and his belief that he can bring him back to life. It took Ptolemy over a year to gain Kurzweil’s confidence to talk in depth about his father—and his plans for his resurection.

“I remember when he first said he would take us to his father’s grave… I said, ‘we have our story,’” the director recalled.

It is an aspect of the film, and of Kurzweil’s story, that the press and the public have seized upon. A talking point of some critics who at times consider Kurzweil a dangerous nut job, is the futurist's belief that not only will he be able to live forever, but that he will be able resurrect his father Fredric, who died in 1970, as well.

“If you listen to Ray talk about it, it doesn’t seem so crazy anymore,” Ptolemy said.

One of the most interesting aspects of the film is the back and forth of Kurzweil’s critics and proponants. Kurzweil himself moves in an out of the film through years of interviews and looks calm and collected as he explains living in virtual reality, downloading a human mind, or injecting millions of nano-sized robots in your blood stream to end the aging process. It’s all as if the ideas were as simple as sending an email—but that’s precisely Kurzweil’s point. Not long ago, he regularly reminds us, today’s technological innovations would have been inconceivable. Central to Kurzweil's predictions is that they will continually be happening quicker, through the law of accelerating returns.

Although Ptolemy said that he believes in the validity of Kurzweil’s ideas, the movie was not controlled by Kurzweil in any way. He didn’t even see it until a few weeks before the film’s debut at the Tribeca Film Festival. Instead Ptolemy said he tried to poke as many holes in the theories as he could, going back to re-interview critics several times as the film progressed.

“If I could find a hole in this and bring down his theory, that would be an important point too,” Ptolemy said. “I never found an argument that was even close to suitable for my own purposes, for my own curiosity, why this could not happen exactly as Ray says it. By no measure is this promoting Ray. We were trying to get the facts straight.”

The tone of Transcendent Man is largely aided by the music of composer Phillip Glass to great effect. Both classical and futuristic, ambient and resounding, Glass’ score lends greatly to the feeling the viewer walks away with in the end.

“First of all, you don’t pick Phillip Glass, he pretty much picks you,” Ptolemy laughed. “We thought early on there were only a couple [of composers] on that list, and Glass was one of them—and he was also interested. The ideas are both vastly simple and vastly complex [in the film] and we wanted something like that. Something simple and yet complex and elegant, and no one resonates like that like Phillip Glass.”

In the future, Ptolemy said he’s probably done with documentary and would really rather never make one again.

“They’re hard in every way and they take a lot of travel,” Ptolemy said. “Narrative film is where my heart is and feature films—particularly science fiction—is where I’d like to go.”

Ptolemy is currently considering a number of topics for future films, and plans to continue to collaborate with Kurzweil on a fictional, sci-fi version of the ideas and predictions in The Singularity is Near.

“We’d like to do a science fiction film about what the future will actually be like in 25 years,” Ptolemy said. “As science fiction is written—it’s really not accurate. Even one of my favorite filmmakers, Steven Spielberg, he makes a film like Minority Report… That was made almost 10 years ago. There’s already a technology in Minority Report that we’ve surpassed. The way the future will really be will be hard to write for, but we’d like to take a crack at it.”

So, how will Ptolemy make films after The Singularity, and what will they look like in the future?

“We’ve been telling stories for thousands of years,” Ptolemy responded. “We could not have this complex civilization without all the reflection and wisdom and knowledge that is shared through the arts and particularly through storytelling.’

“If I create a horror movie in 2027… will all my psychological issues be used in it? I think things will be much more customizable… using our memories. Will we all go sit in the theater? No I don’t think it will be like that. I think it will come directly through our cerebral cortex.”

New Radiohead Video for 'Lotus Flower'

Check out Radiohead's newest song Lotus Flower off the new album, The King of Limbs and maybe their strangest video ever. Thom Yorke gets down in black and white a la Street Spirit (Fade Out) days. The video is mainly a stare-at-the-camera-and-sing-to-the-audience confessional, like a really drunken version of Janelle Monae's Cold War video.

Watch Yorke look both like he's tripping out and also like he has to go to the bathroom a little. Either way, what's obvious is the guy can still swing those hips.

It's a great, dark, hypnotic song and comes at the perfect time for me. I was just wondering what Radiohead was up to, and apparently it's the same things as they always are—making wonderful music.

Sirocco Research Lab Screens 'Red Moon' in Chicago Tonight

Remember when we did that beautiful profile on Sirocco Research Labs in our summer issue this year? Well, the creators of a seriously awesome short film titled Red Moon are in Chicago this week to screen their film at Co-Prosperity Sphere in Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood.

Red Moon is a werewolf story set on a Soviet submersible. Filmed and produced in Los Angeles, we met up with Sirocco while we were out working on the West Coast. They made us dinner, showed us around their studio and talked with us in-depth about starting their own production company and making movies.

Not to be missed, the screening begins at 9 p.m. and will include a showing of Red Moon and Cleo in the Universe. Both films are excellently done, with beautiful set design and costume work. Jettison will be there and you should be too.

Co-Prosperity Sphere is located at 3219 S. Morgan Street. After the screening, the Sirocco crew will be dancing the night away with music provide by Bryan John Appleby and Clique Talk.

Higher Calling

The Calling, a four-hour documentary series to air on Independent Lens on PBS Dec. 20 and 21, follows seven young students as they study to become leaders in their respective faiths. The film allows the viewer to peek into the lives of our religious guides as they struggle to balance identifiable themes from their personal lives—finding love, raising a family and questioning faith in times of loss—all while maintaining their clerical responsibilities. The film is seven years in the making and directed by a talented group of multi-faith filmmakers, and produced by the Chicago-based Kindling Group.

“As a [documentary] filmmaker I set off to look at faith in the US with a keen eye—to ask challenging questions and a critical approach— but I also wanted to balance this with a warm heart— respect and understanding,” said Danny Alpert, director for the series and executive director of the Kindling Group.

Alpert was raised in a self-described, “suburban, Jewish cocoon” and at the age of 15 moved to Israel in what he said his parents, “saw as the fulfillment of their Jewish identity.”

These unique experiences lead Alpert to consider becoming a rabbi. However, eight months from beginning a pre-rabbinical program Alpert realized it was not his calling.

“From that moment—through travel, school, living in a region at war, marriage, parenthood—I learned that the ideas, peoples and individuals in this world are never simple and moved away from my religious observance,” Alpert said.

In order to create a film that was at once critical and respectful, Alpert enlisted a group of talented filmmakers whom also are practitioners of the different faiths explored in the film.

“The point was not only to find a crew of outstanding professional quality— which I fortunately did—but also to find the right people for this project. Religion is not easy—people have strong feelings and it comes with its own baggage. I wanted to find people who I know would look critically and ask the hard questions, but who also had respect and understanding of faith and the faithful… It was not an easy search, but I was blessed to find a talented and dedicated team in Yoni Brook, Alicia Dwyer, Maggie Bowman and Musa Seed,” Alpert said.

While the film follows those who are called by their God, Alpert found that the power behind these stories, as they play out on film, is in the relationships these young clergy-in-training make with other people. He also found hope in the generation’s attitude of wanting to have its cake and eat it too: They want to lead prayer and listen to hip-hop, to use humor as a tool to connect alongside prayer and preaching. They fully embrace their religious lives and at the same time, they are unwilling to sacrifice their identity as young, modern Americans.

The Calling follows Shmuly Yanklowitz and Yerachmiel Shapiro, two rabbis in training, each facing their own personal struggles despite a shared faith, which reminds viewers that the experience of religion is vast and personal.

Tahera Ahmad and Bilal Ansari are both students in the Hartford Seminary’s Muslim Chaplaincy program in Connecticut. However, their familial and religious experiences differ immensely from one another. Bilal is an African-American father of four whose accomplishments include lecturing to prisoners and at-risk youth. Tahera is a recently engaged, strong-headed woman whose undertakings focus on the Arabic language, Qur’an recitation, Islamic studies and other goals from her suburban Chicago community.

Jeneen Robinson is a single mother, who struggles to raise her young son, supplementing her income with an acting career, while studying to become an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. Steven Gamez is learning to become a Catholic priest, a role that differs from the others in its commitment to celibacy. And finally, there is Rob Pene, a Christian rapper of Samoan heritage, who has committed his time as a mentor to young people. He offers his support to underprivileged young men in his community, and teaches science at a public school.

While The Calling is a compilation of seven individual stories, together these subjects complete a larger narrative—one that speaks of the nuanced religious climate Americans experience today. With all of the shared goals for community development recognized on film, as well as points of extreme opposition between them, The Calling is a film that does not seek to answer, but rather question what religious leadership, and therefore faith, means today.

The Calling will air on the PBS series Independent Lens Monday, Dec. 20 and Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010 at 8 p.m. CST.

In conjuncture with the film, Kindling Group has created an interactive project that brings the dialogue from the big screen to your computer screen. The website at http://whatsyourcalling.org/ continues the discussion with videos, interviews and articles organized into thirty different themes. From art, education and family to balance, identity, and transformation, there is surely a conversation to participate in, or something new to learn about. The site allows users to engage in a multitude of dialogues in a “Join the Conversation” section, where users can post their reactions, questions, or stories. The site also functions as a base for activity. The website has partnered with other organizations in an attempt to get users involved in their communities through the, “Service Call to Action” section which provides links to like-minded institutions.

Turns out that Chicago is too small for A&R. It's a bit ironic-the duo can
fit into the tightest clothes imaginable. And yet, they are taking their
brand of soul-pop to the big city, New York, New York.
The Big Apple will probably be a good fit for A&R. If nothing else, they're
sure to find some gigs during fashion week. Assuming east coasters accept
A&R's rustic, Midwestern fashion sense.
Though A&R, as a group, spent less than two years in Chicago, Alex and Rocco
still deserve a going away party. Who knows, they might like New York so
much that they will never return. So, for what might be the last A&R show in
the Windy City, the duo is pulling out all the stops.
The going away party will have guest appearances from Jason Gatz, Ronnie
Bass and Boom Juice, and all the free eye candy that comes with an A&R show.
Friday, May 21st at the Double Door is going to be the best, last A&R show
for at least a few months. Especially since it's free.

Jettison was in Los Angeles last week soaking up some sun and getting some work in. The highlight of our trip was taking some time to sit down with the crew at Sirocco Research Labs. Sirocco is a really cool production company based in LA doing some fun stuff with film. You'll have to check out our piece about Sirocco Research Labs in the upcoming summer issue for the details.

Jettison found some other cool stuff along the way as well. In the Echo Park neighborhood we discovered The Echo Park Independent Co-Op. EPIC is a boutique stocked with local designer wares that knocked out socks off. You can check out their stuff here, as well as shop online: http://shopepicla.com/.

Also, right up Jettison's alley was this awesome shop (See photos). Time Travel Mart was stocked with so much exciting robot stuff, we freaked (they sell time travel supplies as well, and Black Holes are only a $2.99). On top of that, everything that the store sells goes back into their non-profit after school assistance with children. Time Travel Mart works with kids to help them with their homework and allows them to great creative with fun art projects like book binding classes.

Jettison has some extremely exciting news to announce. This year the magazine will be participating in Chicago's NEXT 2010 art festival at the Merchandise Mart. That's right, so come check out our booth, where we will be proudly displaying the latest issue and spreading the word about who we are and what we do.

But that's not all. Jettison will also be curating a show for the festival titled, The Shape of Things to Come. Featured artists will include Cody Hudson, Chad Kouri, Nadine Nakanishi and Nick Butcher, Aspen Mays, Betsy Odem, Colin Leipelt, Ted Boggs, Matt Nichols, Russe White and more. Hey Everyone, not one but two art happenings tonight include fellow Jettisonians. Pete Skvara joins Co-Prosperity at the second coming of the Get It Together show at the Cultural center. The show features a nice mix of different approaches to collage and assemblage.

Emanuel Aguilar joins 49 other artists in the Alderman Project at Johalla. A project in which 50 artist were paired up with 50 alderman to create portraits that better introduce us private citizens to the politicians that make up our communities. High fives everyone!

Goose Island Brewer Teams Up with Chef from L20 for Odd Pairs Fest

Jared Rouben, head brewer at Goose Island brewpubs, and Emiliano Pimentel Morado, Line Cook at L2O, an upscale Lincoln Park eatery from Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, became friends as classmates at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in New York City. Bound initially by an appreciation of food, Rouben, a professed "wine and beer lover" ultimately moved in another direction in his restaurant career, which began with "an addiction to home production" - and a lot of training at downtown Chicago's Rock Bottom Brewery.

The former classmates have recently discovered a unique avenue for combining their friendship as well as their respective culinary/brewing skills. Odd Pairs is a distinctive quarterly event hosted by Chicago’s Crop to Cup Coffee Company and Bean and Body, conceived, according to the competition's FaceBook page, "to highlight local businesses in Chicago that are doing original...things." Entrants are encouraged to concoct "strange, yet succulent combinations of local flavors, served up socially. We headline chefs on the edge, pushing the envelope on flavor, talent and skill in tandem with sustainability and green practices guiding their businesses."

Crop to Cup is no stranger to Goose Island Brewpubs. While coffee and beer might seem like strange bedfellows to the casual observer, Rouben is currently working with the eco-conscious java producers on a specialty beer, the "Rind Grind," which blends JuJu espresso and lemon peel into a dark stout. I was able to sample this blend during a recent tour of the Goose Island at North and Clybourn. Though neither a regular beer nor coffee drinker, I found myself overcome with the allure of such a novelty, and drank it down in one gulp.

Rouben and Morado believe that for the next Odd Pairs event, to be held privately on Friday, March 26, 2010 they have come up with a showstopper. As Rouben labels it, the duo's Italian ice creation is "L2O, Goose Island style." While the team, naturally, cannot divulge the exact measurements of the ingredients, they are able to take advantage of L2O's giant distiller to produce a thought-provoking, nonalcoholic treat comprised of the following three elements:

1. Goose Island Granita with shaved black lime, sweet citrus emulsion, and edible flowers from chef's garden

2. Triple Distilled Goose Island "Green Line" Mist

3. Cinnamon and citrus-infused hot wort tea

Having been unavailable at press time for a final taste test, the staff at Jettison Quarterly can neither confirm nor deny the deliciousness of this intriguing new variety of Italian ice. Readers will have to follow our blog [insert link] after March 26 for the results of the Odd Pairs judging.

Although Rouben acknowledges that the quarterly event "is a competition," he goes onto to declare that "for us, it isn't about that." For Rouben and Morado, the opportunity to create something new and share it with the culinary community at large, is simply another worthy celebration of food and friendship.

Ron Banks of the Dramatics Passes Away at Age 58

Jettison Quarterly sat down with Ron Banks and the Dramatics before their recent show on the eve of Valentines Day at the Star Plaza Theater in Indiana. We were excited about the interview which is set to appear in our upcoming issue. We got some great pictures from photographer David Elliott and had a great conversation with Ron Banks about the Dramatics, which he founded in the '60's in Detroit, and about his current pet projects aside from the band.

We didn't expect the news of his death on March 4th, and were deeply saddened by it. We had just watched him perform a blowout concert only a few weeks prior. He seemed in good health and high spirits. Ron was a great performer and he was very kind and open with us during the interview and after the performance. We are deeply thankful that we got the opportunity to meet and talk with him.

Jettison would like to pass on it's heartfelt condolences to Ron's family, friends, and of course the Dramatics, which seemed to be a little like both. Ron's interview will be appearing in Jettison's Spring 2010 issue. Check it out, put on your favorite Dramatics jam, and see a master at work.

Our fall issue of Jettison Quarterly is in the bag. We've pretty much completed the whole thing. We have been designing a new site for this issue and it looks amazing. I cant wait to put it up and show all of you.

Issue No. 3 will release on September 11th during the day. Fashion followers should rejoice especially, as our Fashion Section for fall is huge and absolutely gorgeous. We shot designer Kelly Winter's spread in the upper levels of the Hancock Building! Keep your eyes on that shoot, it features the season 11 winner of America's Next Top Model, McKey, as one of our models.

Our friends at the Co-Prosperity Sphere are having a great show this Friday, July 24th and Saturday the 25th. The show is featuring Jettison editor, Peter Skvara and Jettison illustrator, Adi Goodrich. The show is hosted by a friend of Jettison, the Post Family's Chad Kouri. If you're not doing anything else and even if you are, stop by, eat food, drink beers and take a look at some 21st century art! Here's their promo:

Join us for a three dimensional freak out of color, form and material. Walk the isles of a hand-made grocery store created completely out of paper, shoot hoops on a 3 story high basketball net, or just sit down at our collage table and create some work of your own. After the opening and subsequent hangover, come back on July 25th for an art-making BBQ throw down as we combine our creative energies to make collages which we will hand-deliver for free to the people walking around this great city. So drop on by, check out some good stuff and make some of your own. We will have magazines, scissors and glue on hand but feel free to bring your own collage materials to throw down.

Kinda Interesting

Time Out Chicago has an interesting new issue out. On the cover in big, bold letters it asks its readers if Indie still has any Indie Cred. Does it? I say, why not? It features a group of people from Chicago who have some sort of "indie cred" to talk about the subject over dinner. Among the people participating are JC Gabel, former editor and publisher of the soon to be over Stop Smiling magazine, Anne Elizabeth Moore, a former editor of Punk Planet, and Scott Plagenhoef, Editor in Chief of Pitchfork.

For my own part, I've never been particularly interested in the word indie. I like independent things, but I agree with the round table that indie is now more of a corporate tag for a certain style as opposed to anything actually being independent. In my mind, Indie to me still means DIY above all else. In which case, Jettison is about an indie as anything right now.

My main problem with the article however is that everyone invited to participate in the round table discussion is over 30, the youngest being JC Gabel at 33. Although 30 is by no means old, they end up sounding like a bunch of old men lamenting the good old days when things were pure and wonderful. One participant, Bryan Wendorf, co-founder of the Chicago Underground Film Festival asks, "Are 18 year old still having these arguments?" To which JC Gabel responds that, no, "I think they’re at Urban Outfitters."

Thanks a lot, dude! Where's my generations perspective in all this? Are we not doing cool, independent things? One of the most intriguing things about the independent movement has always been to highlight those who are now unestablished. The embrace of the obscure and the constant attempt to hunt down the "new thing that no one else knows about" has allowed countless musicians, artists, filmmakers, etc to be accepted and achieve success.

Stop Smiling will be over soon, Punk Planet is long gone, and the truly independent minded hipsters already shun Pitchfork. So what's next Time Out? What's new? If you want to find out what indie means to people now, maybe you should try asking someone who's actually participating in what's it's going to mean in the future. Try asking someone who's shaping it's meaning now. Otherwise, you just get a bunch of old guys talking trash.

Hey Everyone,

Jettison Quarterly is hard at work on our third issue which will be released in September. We have some great stuff already that you can look forward to seeing in the next issue including a Fall Harvest Special in our Sustainable Gourmet Section. Jettison's resident chef Matt Andorka is hard a work in his lab cooking up some delicious treats for you all. The expanded section will include information about urban gardening including raising chickens in the city. Feel like starting your own urban farm? Also in the plans are a couple of new sections including cartoons, history lessons and much more.

Alright fans,

The new issue, Jettison Quarterly's Issue No. 2 Summer 2009, is done! We are working right now to get it up online so all of you can view it with your own eyes. We are very excited about our newest issue. It's over a hundred pages long and full of great pieces and incredible photography. I cant wait for everyone to see our incredible interview with Casey Spooner from Fischerspooner, complete with photos from their recent show at the Metro.

The release party for the new issue is going to be great. DJ sets from J+J+J and Chandeliers (who we also have an interview with in this issue). The show will be at the Halfway Lounge, 1742 N. Milwaukee Ave, Chicago (in Wicker Park). It is going to be a ton of fun. Great dancing, great music and some cool party favors. The show starts at 8 pm.

We are hoping that the issue will drop on Friday, June 12th, but check back for more posts on an exact time that it will be viewable.

Jettison Success at the NFO XPO

Loyal readers,

we had a great time at the NFO XPO last weekend. Yes, it was mostly just us sitting in one spot all day long, but we made some friends and had a good time anyways. I think I only ate one meal a day that weekend, but that's alright too. It's almost bikini season, right? Pete, Adi and Ted's Shelter Show was a huge success as well. If you were not able to check-check-check it out last weekend, it's still up and will be for about a month in the Benton House backyard.

Jettison passed out a ton of business cards and got everyone who stopped by to sign up for a subscription. We talked a lot about the magazine and Pete gave a wonderful explanation of what Jettison means to him to some stranger. But, overall we got a really good response. We even met a couple of people who had already heard about it.

Events! What's happening with Jettison? Version Fest and NFO XPO

Version Fest takes off this weekend. Our managing editor and our # 1 illustrator, Peter Skvara and Adi Goodrich (respectively) played big roles in bringing together the shelter part of the show. Version Fest is a huge art event that is being held in Bridgeport April 24th through May 3rd. This year's show is going to be amazing and if you're not doing anything, you have no excuse not to go check it out. If you already had something planned, cancel it. You don't want to be the only one at the water cooler on Monday who didn't go, do you?

Jettison is going to be a part of the Version Fest celebration by participating in the NFO XPO (sound it out). NFO XPO is April 25th and April 26th at the Benton House in Bridgeport. Jettison will be there hanging out, giving stuff away and displaying the magazine we have worked so tirelessly on. NFO XPO is from 1pm to 8pm on Saturday and 1pm to 12 am on Sunday. The Benton House is located at 3052 S. Graten Avenue.

So Rod Balgojevich is back in the news again and aside from all the normal shit he's been up to, apparently he's thinking of joining the ranks of reality tv show cast member. That's right. At his latest court appearance his attorney mentioned that Rod would soon be asking to get his passport back, which was taken when he was arrested. NBC confirmed that if that happens, Rod will join other celebrities on a show called, "I'm a celebrity...Get me out of here!" The show will be filmed in the Costa Rican jungle and test the celebrity's (and one corrupt politician's) ability to adapt. Luckily, NBC is not paying Rod, or the other celebrities for their appearance. The money will be donated to their favorite charity.

Also in Illinois news...

A special state legislative subcommittee recently held a meeting over Senate Bill 1381, the bill that would legalize marijuana in Illinois for those suffering with serious medical conditions. Another bill recently passed the House Human Services Committee on March 9th called the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act. This will be the first medical marijuana bill to get off the house floor.

In Chicago news, an Englewood teenager has been charged with the murder of a 15-year-old Chicago Public School student over a dispute at a dice game. The student becomes the 32nd CPS student to be killed this school year. 32 kids is a pretty damn big number. What the fuck, Chicago?

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for checking out the news Jettison blog. We had a really great meeting yesterday and started planning out our next issue which will be out in June. If you still have not read our first issue, it can be found at www.jettisonquarterly.com

While the first issue is still taking a little while to load, we think we've fixed some of those problems for our next issue. We have a new man on board and his name is Juan. He's going to be helping us with our website and readers should expect to be blown away. The stuff he's got up his sleeves for all of you is awesome.

Anyways, check out our pics from our launch party at Subterranean on March 5th. It was a lot of fun. Extra special thanks to everyone who came out. Adi (illustrator for issue no. 1) did an amazing job on the limited edition prints we put out.
